Broccoli Flavonoids

Published March 3rd, 2007

Broccoli is a member of the cabbage family, it is closely related to the cauliflower, the name broccoli comes from the Latin word brachium meaning arm or branch. Broccoli has been used since ancient Roman times; it is dark green in colour with a tree like structure of stalk, stem and florets.

Broccoli has many health benefits; it contains the phytochemicals, sulforaphane and indole which have anti-cancer properties. Sulforaphane also helps to repair the skin from sun damage. The flavonoids within broccoli can help to protect the heart.

Broccoli contains the powerful antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which are also said to reduce the risk of cataracts.
