Blueberry Flavanoids Improve Memory

Published April 13th, 2008

Researchers from the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter believe that eating blueberries daily can reverse memory. They believe that the fruit’s high levels of antioxidants, called flavanoids, which help fight disease and have been shown to stimulate regeneration within brain cells, may be the key.

Volunteers who ate 300g of blueberries a day, in addition to their normal diet, reported improvements in memory within three weeks, according to the study published in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine.

Dr Matt Whiteman, from Peninsula Medical School, said the same results could be achieved by replacing half the amount of blueberries with other flavonoid-rich foods such as apples, aubergines and blackberries.
